Widow Jane Whiskey Distilled From a Rye Mash American Oak Aged

Sampled neat. Batch 31, bottle 655. There's a good reason it's named American oak aged. I detect a lot of wood on the nose and palate, which seems to taste light and young. I also notice rye, barley, grain, and green apple. It's generally smooth but feels thin on the palate, tasting somewhat young with difficulty discerning many notes. I can imagine this being a great rye for someone new to sipping whiskey.

Uncertain of the mash bill, but it tastes like another high-rye MGP-sourced variation. Familiar flavor notes with a somewhat drier finish and a strong blast of mint. Nothing novel here. I received this bottle from a friend and would not purchase it, as there are numerous choices in the same category, many at a lower price. I favor the 51% barley rye profiles and am becoming weary of these imitators............65/100

Having this shortly after the Black Maple Hill Rye (Green Label) brought it to mind. It's a bit less grassy, smoother, sweeter, more effortless, and better balanced. It lacks a bit of depth. It's slightly more forgettable. I find this to be a rather interesting pour. It has some spice, naturally, but less than a typical rye. Its color is lighter than many spirits. A hint of clove. A touch of spiced wine.

It has a sweet aroma, with a hint of apple. It finishes with a slight smell of alcohol. It's smooth. Really smooth. It certainly has a rye spiciness, plus something else. There are some earthy notes, likely from the American oak. To be honest, this is amazing. Another excellent flavor from Widow Jane. I am a fan.

The aroma is almost floral, with notes of dill and freshly cut vegetables. The palate is sweet and spicy, then it mellows out; it's well-rounded with more dill, mint, and sugar. It's simply pleasant. It tastes like Willett 4-year rye but at 90 proof. It's easy to drink, not challenging, just really nice.

The aroma is somewhat astringent with dried flowers, dried citrus, straw, and rye spices. The palate is also somewhat astringent with rye spices, oak, and brief hints of vanilla. The finish is medium with a fading astringency, rye, and oak.
