About this bottle

Mosswood's "gray label" series showcases limited runs of whiskeys given an additional maturation in distinctive casks. The third bottling in this collection is a light whiskey, aged 9 years, which spent approximately half a year in a cask previously holding Mosswood's homemade nocino, a liqueur derived from walnuts. For context, "light whiskey" is defined as spirits distilled between 160 and 190 proof; unlike bourbon, which has a maximum distillation proof of 160, light whiskey can be matured in either previously used oak or new, uncharred oak containers.

Batch #3. The nose is interesting and pleasant... hints of glue, sour orchard fruit, clove honey, holiday spice. After a few minutes, walnuts emerge. On the palate, there's a somewhat creamy mouthfeel, with a bitter herbal note, followed by the influence of nocino. It finishes with some sweetness and bitter nut shells. The warmth isn't intense but it persists. It's not bad, but it leaves you wanting more depth and complexity. 8/1/18
