White Oak Akashi Shin Select Reserve

A buddy received three whiskies for his birthday: this Akashi Select Reserve, Bulleit Bourbon, and Tomatin Single Malt. He wanted to share, so we had a few sips. I figured we'd try them in that order, thinking the flavors would increase. We began with the Japanese whisky, not expecting much. The aroma was quite subtle, and the taste was okay, but not remarkable. We detected some oak and herbs, though the finish was brief and a little slick. We both felt it was a decent opening act, but that's all.

Very sugary, a bit peppery, the ending is short. It is mellow and goes down easily. Not a large quantity of alcohol in a serving. The smell is inviting.

While a gentle character seems typical for Akashi, this one presents with a bit more zing.

Lacks distinct flavor but isn't harsh; it's acceptable.
