WhistlePig 15 Year Single Barrel Estate Oak Rye

Nose: Intense dark cinnamon bark, prominent ethanol notes, subtle hints of vanilla. I chose to let this breathe for approximately 20 minutes to observe any changes, and I'm glad I did. While it was already enjoyable, after airing it out, alongside the cinnamon bark and vanilla, I detected: hints of apricot and white pear, a pleasant almond note, and some orange circus peanut marzipan. The complexity significantly increased, making it far superior to the previous version in my opinion. Starts with brown sugar and vanilla, followed by ethanol-infused oak with a touch of apple cider tartness through the mid-palate. This smoothly transitions into a warm cinnamon finish. It's too vibrant to have substantial malted sugars, although the finish does incorporate a slight maltiness. Those sweet fruit notes from the nose are not very prominent here; instead, there's a comforting sensation of warm honey on rye bread, with subtle hints of allspice and dill. While the nose is exceptionally impressive, earning a 5.0, considering the approximate $250 price point it typically carries, I would expect a bit more complexity in the body. The ratio of price to complexity will lower its overall score somewhat. The age and proof still make this a robust rye, best reserved for special occasions. Cheers!

Light gold color. Sweet citrus, allspice, and toffee are immediately apparent. Notes of warm caramel, raw honey, cinnamon spice, and vanilla extract are present, leading into a pleasant rye finish. Despite the body being somewhat light for a 15-year-old expression, the finish compensates for this. Lingering sweet black pepper is an unexpected characteristic. A fantastic whisky for sipping, and I'm eager to observe its evolution with more aeration in the bottle.

A letdown considering the cost. The aroma is barely perceptible, and the palate lacks complexity. In my opinion, the 12-year-old world rye is superior. Skip this one.

Pleasantly surprising. Sweet with an appealing copper hue. It possesses a richness not found in prior 15-year Whistle Pig experiences. 4.15.
