Very Old Barton 80 Proof Bourbon

Some months back, my wife visited relatives in Kentucky while I was away for work. I suggested some bourbons for her to find there that are hard to get in South Carolina. She returned with this one, purchased for $14. It's a great low-cost, 80 proof, and at least 3-year-old bourbon. The spirit is smooth and has some flavor, though it's a bit thin. For me, its flavor profile is similar to Evan Williams 1783, with the taste appearing upfront and disappearing quickly upon swallowing. However, the flavor itself differs from EW; it possesses a sharpness and woodiness absent in EW. This isn't to say it's bad, just distinct. Being 80 proof, it mixes well with many things, though it can get lost in a Manhattan. It's a very enjoyable bourbon that I wish was more accessible here. Cheers.

Brought home from a bachelor party - a friend had bought a whole 1.75 L bottle. First tasted at home. The color is VERY light. The smell has a lot of ethyl acetate and a hint of banana. The taste is actually pretty pleasant... smooth and easy to sip. Good caramel, vanilla, spice, a floral note (rose perhaps?), and a subtle banana hint.

I enjoy this pleasant sipper because it is exceptionally smooth. It lacks significant complexity but makes for a nice evening drink. The aroma is of oak and graham crackers. Woody, leathery, and vanilla notes on the palate. Light-bodied due to being diluted to 80 proof.

I believe I prefer the 100 proof version. It has a similar intensity but slightly less flavor. Nevertheless, it's a solid bourbon with plenty of sweet notes. I'm eager to sample the 86, 90, and 94 proof expressions.

Nose presents faint hints of nutty caramel and perhaps stone fruit. Palate is mellow, with moderate alcohol presence. Flavors of toffee, caramel, and baked bread emerge. Finish is crisp, fleeting, yet enjoyable to drink.

There are times when an 80 proof bourbon is precisely what's needed! This is a bourbon (caramel, vanilla, and some light brown sugar). Nothing complex, and nothing that demands your attention!
