Ungava Gin

Gin is a fascinating spirit, capable of truly embodying a place by incorporating its local botanicals. I was anticipating this one for some time, as it features numerous regional herbs and plants specific to the Canadian north. Nose: Juniper, pine, and a whisper of lemon. It evokes recollections of strolling through the woods during fishing excursions in Quebec. Palate: Sweet and viscous, with a prominent lemon meringue pie flavor. It's good, though not as herbaceous as I'd expect given the botanicals used. Finish: Brief to moderate, but with a mix of tastes that are difficult for me to pinpoint, except for Labrador tea, which is quite distinctive once sampled. I believe they could have toned down the lemon slightly, but it's truly delightful. It's even better served on ice. I enjoy it because it doesn't attempt to be a London Dry; instead, it offers something uniquely Canadian/Boreal.

Appearance: Clear bright yellow, with abundant medium legs that move at a moderate pace from a fine crest. Nose: Celery, mint, Labrador tea, peppery, piney, vibrant juniper, fruity ethanol, fragrant wildflowers & roses notes, currant, dried lemon peel, vegetal undertones. Palate: Slight sweetness, moderate burn, medium body, candied lemon, mint, celery, fresh juniper berries. Finish: Medium finish that lingers with fresh floral & vegetal notes.

The aroma is medicinal and herbal, with wildflowers, strong juniper, and spruce. It tastes of mint, lemon, pine, juniper, and fennel seed. There's some sweetness - vanilla, honey. It feels a bit oily and has a fairly substantial kick and burn. It's evident that this is a strongly flavored gin, with a diverse range of notes that keep it interesting. Because of this, it has the structure for a good G&T.

Smooth (a touch oily), bright, and fresh. Harmonious juniper, deep floral rose, tea, and citrus. As lively in flavor as its golden hue, with enough body to enjoy neat. Similar to Bulldog but with more emphasis on rose. Adds a soft rose petal character when mixed. Makes a fantastic G&T. $35 in Ontario.

A dry, fruit-forward gin that highlights the berries found in the Canadian tundra. It's great neat, but slightly more intriguing on ice. Highly recommended for any Gin enthusiast seeking a fruit-forward Gin!

I genuinely like this one, although the floral notes might not appeal to everyone. It's an enjoyable spirit, and you don't need a large serving to appreciate its depth of flavor. I highly recommend it!
