About this bottle
The Uncle Nearest brand pays tribute to Nathan "Nearest" Green, who instructed Jack Daniel in distillation. The 1884 Small Batch bottling is named to honor the approximate year Mr. Green concluded his barrel-filling activities and retired. CEO and co-founder Fawn Weaver selects each barrel for this batch. Furthermore, a different descendant of Mr. Green will curate each batch, with their name appearing on the bottle's reverse. While the brand suggests a minimum aging period of 7 years, no specific age is indicated on the bottle. Please note: As of 2022, this product is being superseded by an 1884 Small Batch Whiskey that is entirely distilled, aged, and bottled by Uncle Nearest. The packaging for the new whiskey will feature a horseshoe encircling a dram of spirit.

An elegant Tennessee Whiskey from an unnamed distillery, crafted from a blend curated and approved by a descendant of Nathan "Nearest" Green; aged for at least 7 years and bottled at a perfect 46.5% ABV.
It has an aromatic beginning with notes of toasted wood and honey; while an elegant middle adds notes of botanicals, vanilla, and brown butter; leading to a crisp and dry conclusion of medium length with hints of apple juice, pineapple, cherry, and toasted wood. August / December 2020 / August 2022

Nose: A hint of floral, buttered popcorn, and honey.
Palate: It's smooth as can be, though that term might be overused. Subtle oak notes are present, along with some floral elements.
Finish: Not excessively hot or spicy. It drinks well at its stated proof and could certainly be an everyday option.
Overall: This was a gift from a friend who suggested listening to a particular podcast before tasting. I also viewed their website's video. An incredible story! I'm pleasantly surprised by this and will remain a supporter of this brand.

A well-made, sophisticated whiskey. The smell offers vanilla, sugar, and a whisper of cherry. The taste is light and somewhat zesty: more vanilla, cookies, a touch of honey, cereal, oak, and a little rye spice. The weak finish is its only real flaw – it lacks a grand finale of flavor. All in all, it's agreeable and simple to drink. Seek elsewhere for an explosion of barrel-proof flavor. It probably needs more time to age. It doesn't quite live up to the buzz, but it's still a delicious, smooth drink.

An interesting backstory for this whisky, but it doesn't quite deliver. Vanilla on the nose, overshadowed by the alcohol. Unfortunately, alcohol dominates the taste and lingers. This might be a good choice for a cocktail, but I don't recommend it neat. Even with a little water, it lacks depth.

Pleasantly surprised by this. I'm not detecting the usual charcoal taste common in Tennessee whiskey. However, the cost for this bottle is hard to justify.

After touring the Jack Daniels distillery recently, I purchased this whiskey. It's the Uncle Nearest 1884 small batch expression, selected by V Eddie Butler. Very pronounced vanilla notes.
