Tullibardine 25 Year

This expression leans more towards wood than fruit when compared to Tullibardine 12, but then unexpectedly reveals tropical notes. Passion fruit and mango emerge subtly mid-palate and persist into the conclusion. It offers commendable complexity, with richness extending beyond mineral and coarse bread characteristics. The spice feels a bit intense considering the lack of significant variation from beginning to end. Tropical fruits effectively integrate the coarse bread notes. It's a remarkably pleasant, well-rounded Scotch, albeit with an excess of minerality. The tropical nuances truly invigorate it and evoke Bushmill's 21. It's pleasing, with flavors that ultimately harmonize. I do wish there was less coarse bread, however. Fortunately, the tropical fruits and apricot redeem it. It's delightful to drink, though likely not worth the anticipated high cost. It's somewhat akin to a distinct, more flamboyant interpretation of Highland Park The Light. Its tropical characteristics are prominent, placing it in a similar category. Otherwise, it would feel aimless and purposeless. I'd be happy to enjoy this on most occasions but probably wouldn't purchase a bottle. The fruity finish is appreciated, much like Bushmill's 21.

This review is a "Quick Hit" - meaning I won't have my usual detailed notes. The reason: this sample was poured at Whiskyfest DC on 4/17/18. All of these reviews will not be scored and I am actively looking to try them again at some point to do them more justice. I was looking to take full advantage of the VIP hour to try as many older, age statement whiskies as possible. This one was no exception. Some of the various Tullibardine cask finished whiskies are very good. This 25 had a nice flavor to it, but there seemed to be a shortage of depth and complexity here. It’s a tasty dram, I was just hoping for more - especially at the $230 price point. Hopefully I’ll get to try this one sometime in the near future.

Notes from tasting event DC Whiskyfest 2018, my fourth sample. I only managed twelve due to falling ill that afternoon, which significantly impacted my senses and well-being. I should have remained in my room, but I didn't spend $350 on VIP access just to rest! No scores were assigned, as I felt it wouldn't be fair. Notes of PX sherry, fruit, sweetness, with soft and refined oak. It was pleasant but seemed younger than 25 years old. The palate presented peppery oak, sweet and spicy notes, not what I anticipated for a 25-year-old spirit. Quite enjoyable and recommended.

Hmm, another instance where age doesn't necessarily equate to superiority. I favor the NAS Murray, regardless of cost, and the 20-year expression. I've observed that many drams, once they surpass the 18 to 21-year mark, become overly oaked and slightly bitter, even after significant aeration. The 20-year point seemed optimal. It has heavy toffee, a touch of spicy wood that isn't too harsh and mellows with further consumption. At $200 USD, it's a reasonable value for a 25-year-old. By the end, I grew to appreciate it a bit more.

A powerful aroma of maple syrup and molasses. Intensely sweet. However, the taste is quite muted. Flavors are extremely light and vanish instantly, perhaps a trace of smoke on the finish, but frankly, I'm bewildered. I truly cannot identify any specific flavors. Maybe I'm fading. Maybe this is my conclusion.

Tulibardin 25 Year (43%) From a Sherry Hogshead (typically 225L). Aroma: Deeply inhaled, nothing stands out; the aroma is weak, with a little dried fruit and a bit of grain, and a subtle sweetness from the sherry remains. Taste: Light sherry, not a fresh sensation, perhaps dried hay? Finish: Mild spice, smooth, with a gentle warmth like a fireplace. Nothing particularly remarkable.
