The Rare and Wiley Vodka A new release from The Apothecary Distillery in Asheville NC, a place mostly recognized for its distinctive gins. APPEARANCE: As is typical for this distillery, the bottle and label are visually appealing and unconventional (much like most things in Asheville). "Said to be Stardust magically transformed into clear spirit...Mischievously created by the hands of Enchanted Monkeys...Under the waning of a Blue Harvest Moon...etc, etc, etc." NOSE: The aroma possesses a Savory, Umami Quality. It's grainy and very grain-forward. Although not stated, I suspect this is a Wheat-Based spirit. Perhaps Wheat Toast? There's a subtle hint of a Powdery Sweetness reminiscent of Pixie Sticks or Sweet Tarts. PALATE: Surprisingly sweet initially. While the nose suggested Pixie Sticks or Sweet Tarts, the palate fully embraces it at first. This sweetness is balanced by some of the savoriness in the mid-palate. Overall, it's quite neutral. There's a pleasant mild burn on the finish. The aftertaste leans more towards Grainy than Sweet. VERDICT: The label claims "Tasteless-For Your Pleasure". It also suggests "With absolutely no aroma or taste this easy to drink spirit makes every cocktail a real Wiley one". While this might have been the objective, thankfully, it was not achieved. I found the aroma and taste of this to be quite enjoyable. It certainly retains some of the character of the wheat, making for a very pleasant spirit served neat over ice. It blended well when paired with a good tonic, but its presence was easily detectable when sought out. I appreciate supporting quality craft products when they are worthwhile, and this is another quality $19.99 NC-made Vodka that can substitute for brands like Stoli, Reyka, or Tito's in my collection.
