Macallan Estate

This appears to be an independent NAS bottling, not associated with the order's NAS line or the current one. It was a spontaneous buy. I recall trying it at a whisky event and adding it to my list when this was released years ago. Now, here it is. Nose: Typical Macallan character. Milk chocolate and orange zest. Vanilla, caramel, and butterscotch. A sweetness akin to molasses is present. Hints of pencil lead and tangerine emerge subtly. I'm approaching this without much context, but detecting plum, raisin, fig, date, and red grape, suggesting sherry influence, which is expected from Macallan, though their formula has shifted recently. Notes of apple, pear, and apricot are in the background, along with some oak. Palate: Again, milk chocolate, orange and tangerine citrus, and vanilla. It's reminiscent of dessert with fruit and cake. The apple, pear, and apricot are more prominent on the palate. Honey, caramel, and malt. More plum, fig, date, raisin, and plum. A hint of honeydew. Finish: Yet again, milk chocolate, orange and tangerine citrus, and vanilla. Caramel, malt, and honey. Golden raisin, fig, date, and plum. Spices like ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, black pepper, and oak. The finish is moderately long. This is a pleasant, easy-drinking whisky. It's a good example of the Macallan profile from the "Edition series." It's smoother than any of them, and while it doesn't excel in any single aspect, it's likely the most well-rounded Macallan I've encountered. Now, I must consider value for money. Purely based on quality, it's an undoubtedly solid malt. However, when I think about acquiring three bottles of excellent Scotch for the price of this one, that factor must be considered. At $275, it's perfectly enjoyable but unremarkable. 3.75/5. It would be a 4.0 star whisky if I disregarded the cost. It truly is very good. Something you might decant to impress discerning guests, if that's your practice. For the most part, it met expectations. The price is a drawback. Nevertheless, it's unquestionably a fine representation of the Macallan flavor profile. I wouldn't repurchase it, but it's certainly worth trying if you can get a taste. Cheers.

I'm always curious when a distillery uses different barley varieties, as it often leads to subtle variations from their usual profile. Bruichladdich has experimented with various barleys, yielding mixed results for me, with the farm-to-bottle Octomore X.3 editions, which feature single-farm sourced barley, being my favorite. Next in my exploration of Macallan's range, I have a sample of their Estate, made with barley grown on the Macallan grounds and bottled at 43% ABV. The aroma begins with a blend of tart lemon, crystallized ginger, and a mild earthy funk, followed by cocoa-dusted prunes, subtle minerality, and toasted hazelnuts. This then transitions to slightly sour grapes, sautéed apples, and orange peel, leading into light baking spices and a mildly bitter black tea with minimal alcohol sharpness. The taste has a thin texture, starting with sweet tropical fruits before a moderately bitter and sour spice emerges. This slowly fades into tart lemon, crystallized ginger, and scorched hay bales, then cocoa-dusted prunes, espresso, and toasted hazelnuts. It's followed by pineapple, Granny Smith apple skin, and orange peel, transitioning to light baking spices and a mildly bitter black tea with low ethanol burn. The finish is brief, featuring sour grapes, mango, cocoa-dusted prunes, black pepper, ginger, and a mildly bitter black tea. To me, this appears to be a young, thin spirit that turned out about average. The nose is primarily sour with a light farmyard funk and mild bitter tea. The taste is slightly better than the nose, offering sweet tropical fruits before a bitter, sour spice dominates, leaning back towards the sourness of the nose. The finish is rather sour, with a light tropical fruit note preventing it from being overwhelmingly so, along with mild bitter tea. Considering it costs nearly $275 in my area, this is not something I'd consider buying a full bottle of anytime soon. I'd be quite content with many other less expensive options that I find offer a superior experience.

Aroma: candied ginger, caramel, lemons, cedar, cinnamon Taste: Initially, a rush of lemon flavors, ginger, wood spice, figs Finish: A long, satisfying finish with bright citrus and a smooth texture Truly, truly excellent. The aroma and taste are quite intricate. This spirit develops as you drink it, which I appreciate. I enjoy the ginger notes typically found in Macallan, and the estate bottling really emphasizes them. The wood spice is sometimes dominant, but it harmonizes well with bright citrus and caramel.

The aroma of this scotch is rich with sweet sherry and carries strong notes of oak and minerals. It feels creamy and silky on the palate, with flavors of sweet dark fruits like dates, a pleasant warming spice, and just a hint of tannic dryness to balance the sweetness. The finish is woody with a warming spice.

This offers little competition to the 18-year-old Sherry Cask, which is priced similarly. I was searching for words to describe this dram until my companion picked up the glass, smelled it, and remarked: 'It's a bit lacking in body.' I can't really disagree. As usual.

A pleasant and sophisticated drink with flavors of raisins, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, bitter oranges, dark chocolate, pepper, baking spices, toffee, vanilla, citrus, and prunes. I wished it had a bit more body on the palate.
