The Macallan 1861 Replica

Prepare for an incredible account. A long time ago, a Chinese online writer, back when internet connections were dial-up, earned substantial income online. He stayed at a Swiss hotel and encountered a rare 1876 Macallan at the bar. He persuaded the hotel manager to sell him a glass, paying a record price at the time. He shared images of his pour online, prompting scrutiny from internet connoisseurs regarding discrepancies. Around that period, several vintage Macallan bottles surfaced at auctions, leading the distillery to acquire approximately 100 of them. The controversy regarding a potentially fake bottle erupted. Macallan dispatched specialists to examine the bottle and collect a sample. Researchers determined the bottle was fraudulent, containing a young blended whisky from 1970, which was essentially worthless. The hotel owner reimbursed the writer. Macallan, having acquired numerous bottles, discovered many in their museum were also counterfeit. This incident prompted Macallan to publish a guide on identifying vintage Macallans and to release a collection of visually appealing bottles named the "replica series." This series aimed to emulate earlier Macallan expressions and capitalize on the fake bottle scandal, serving as a tribute to the deception. One such bottle, the 1861 replica, from the distillery's release, became part of a notable collection. Following the owner's passing, the collection was auctioned, and I acquired it, subsequently opening and enjoying the bottle. It was bottled at 42.7% ABV. The nose was delightful, starting with a distinct grape juice note, followed by sawdust, chocolate, hazelnut, and Nutella. After the initial taste, notes of strawberry jam, granola, and various berries emerged. The palate was quite good, featuring vanilla cake, figs, and red fruits like strawberries. It had impalpable sugar, a wine-like quality, and a hint of spice. A second taste revealed chocolate, hazelnut, and abundant red fruits. The finish was entirely discordant, heavily oaked with sawdust and oak spice, reminiscent of a cigar box. It was short and dissimilar to the palate. In my opinion, Macallan likely over-oaked the finish of this single malt to simulate age, aiming to replicate the 1861 whiskies. While the aroma is exceptional and the palate very enjoyable, the finish is merely average. Consequently, I award this whisky a score of 91 out of 100, a fair rating for a superb dram that slightly faltered in the final aspect.
