The Glendronach 12yo from 1963

My friends, life sometimes presents a moment where you stumble upon a coveted bottle, one you've longed to try, perhaps too costly to justify, and you find it readily available at a bar for a fraction of the price. These joyful encounters are the wonderful, small experiences that make my entire whiskey journey worthwhile. This was precisely my experience with the final pour I had in Scotland this year, on my last night, at the last establishment. The magnificent Glendronach 12 year old... from 1963. I recognize this historical piece, with its dark green bottle and vintage label. You understand it won't be the pinnacle of whisky tasting, being a 12-year-old single malt that might have been a standard offering sixty years ago. This is a journey back in time. A conduit carrying the spirit that would eventually mature into the whisky I cherish today. How did it taste? Precisely as anticipated: On the nose, it begins with aged characteristics. Old books, dampness, oranges, and a subtle sherry influence. Oranges coated in chocolate. Cherries. On the palate, I was delighted to discover the early stages of the incredible flavors I appreciate now. A rich chocolate sensation; Orange zest. Slightly thin, but predominantly chocolate and hazelnut notes. Red fruits. It truly embodies "Glendro." A pleasant aftertaste. Hazelnut, chocolate, milk powder. A satisfying nutty finish. In summary, this met my expectations. Not a flawless dram, nor a top-scoring single malt, but the origin of the flavors and aromas found in today's exceptional expressions. It's clear that Glendronach has maintained its core character while improving its maturation process, selecting outstanding casks since Billy Walker took over the distillery, and now Rachel Barrie continues that excellent work. A significant piece of whisky history, pure artistry, earning a score of 85 out of 100, but a perfect rating in my heart.
