The Balvenie 1509 Batch 8 was the priciest bottle I opened in 2023, and it's worth the $500! However, it's not as good as the Clynelish, showing how much I adore that Clynelish. The Balvenie isn't a fantastic distillery; they lack character. They're close to being high-end and collectible, but not quite. Their spirit excels with ex-bourbon maturation, though not as well as many others. It also does well with sherry cask maturation, but again, not as well as many others. Their attempts at peaty special releases are terrible, and their standard range from 12 to 21 years old is uninspired. Yet, their NAS TUN releases consistently captivate, and this one should be Balvenie's flagship. I've sampled many Balvenie TUN releases previously but only bought this bottle. Perhaps it's post-purchase justification, but this is the best TUN I've tried. The 1401 releases were intense sherry bombs that now command thousands on the secondary market, but they came out when single cask Glendronachs were affordable and Macallan 18s were only $200. Balvenie as a sherry bomb is just okay. The 1509s, while less lauded by enthusiasts than the 1401s, possess greater complexity and represent the distillery's essence. Batch 8 leans more towards sherry than bourbon influence, yet that smooth, honeyed bourbon character is crucial to this Balvenie. The rich, deep, dark raisin flavors are the highlights, but its balance justifies the high price. It's like vanilla cake with honey, marmalade, gingerbread crumble, and orange zest. I think Balvenie aims for inoffensiveness, and they succeed – any whisky drinker would appreciate a Balvenie as a gift. However, this Balvenie TUN batch 8 is a gift you give yourself for an exceptional, decadent experience.
