We all have a teacher or mentor who profoundly impacts our career choices, shaping our lives for decades. This influence, whether obvious or subtle, guides our path. For me, that person was my 5th-grade teacher. I used to skip school to play chess with older folks in the park. This situation could have easily ended badly – he could have contacted my parents, expelled me, or simply made me attend class. However, he recognized that a creative approach was needed for a student cutting class to gamble. He introduced me to authors like Shelly, Poe, Hardy, London, and Hemingway, along with chemistry, physics, finance, and economics. Reflecting on this, his guidance led me to pursue degrees in Chemical Engineering and an MBA. We all have someone like that. This brings me to this bottle. While searching the collection for some bottles to share with a friend, I found two small samples of this aged Talisker. I recall purchasing the full bottle back in 2008 and enjoying it so much that I saved two samples for later. While it wasn't my first whiskey, it ignited my passion for it, transforming a casual drink into a serious interest. It's my equivalent of Mr. D in the whiskey world. I used one of the samples to re-evaluate it and see if it held up to my memory. It's undeniably the finest Talisker I've experienced, possibly ranking among my top three whiskies ever. The nose evokes an old library situated by a rugged coastline, with scents of aged leather books and salty sea air. The palate echoes this, adding notes of seaweed, scorched leather, and a humidor. It's truly exceptional. I'm unsure of its current availability, but if you can find it, it's definitely worth buying. Twenty-one years in a Sherry cask have clearly worked their magic on this Talisker.
