Talisker 44 Year Forests of the Deep

This promises to be an exceptional experience. I have had the pleasure of tasting a remarkable single malt from one of my two favorite distilleries globally. The distillery's slogan, "Made by the Sea," has never been more fitting. Allow me to describe an impressive and exceptionally rare bottling from this distillery, aged 44 years. This is far from an ordinary single malt, not only due to its four decades of aging but also its unique finishing process. To highlight oceanic preservation efforts, this dram was partially matured in a custom cask constructed from oak staves that journeyed on a ship through the Cape of Hope. There, the staves were infused by seawater spray from the vessel's movement. Subsequently, the barrel was charred using this sea-exposed wood along with abundant natural kelp gathered from the seabed near the Cape of Good Hope. The packaging emphasizes kelp's role as a vital global lung, possessing a remarkable capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. A truly commendable initiative. This single malt was bottled at 49.1% ABV and exhibits a beautiful reddish color. Production was limited to under 2,000 bottles. On the nose, it is the finest example of this distillery's work I've encountered. It begins with notes of dark sponge cake, raisins, and peanuts. Actual kelp can be detected on the nose, evoking a maritime or herbal scent. It smells like a beach shoreline, with hints of bacon. It's incredibly elegant, featuring notes of gooseberries, ash, and an almost imperceptible sweetness. The complexity extends to plums, povidone, and rainforest aromas. After the initial taste, the aroma shifts to figs, dates, and dark chocolate. Further sips and allowing it to breathe release a combination of ash, chocolate, and raisins. It is spectacular. The palate offers a first sip that transports one to whisky nirvana. It's maritime yet sweet, clearly having benefited from aging in a very old sherry cask. It presents as salty and peppery, akin to a perfectly grilled steak at a barbecue. The second sip is more direct, with a pleasant vanilla note mingling with salt. Herbal, maritime, oyster, and rainforest characteristics are present. It is absolutely gorgeous. The finish is eternal, the longest salty finish I have ever experienced. Notes of pepper and a very salty coal-cooked steak linger. It's unforgettable, with herbal qualities that evoke the sensation of having eaten a piece of wood from an old pier. In summary, this is straightforward to explain: it ranks among my top 3 favorite whiskies of all time, possibly holding the second position. Consequently, it achieves a perfect score, but more than just a number, it represents a truly unforgettable experience that will remain with me forever. A score of 100000 out of 100, cheers!
