Talisker 25yo Natural Cask Strength, vintage 1975, bottled in 2001

When asked which single malt I'd take to a deserted island for life, my answer is always the same: a whisky from one of my two favorite distilleries, Talisker or Glendronach. I adore Talisker. I've experienced incredible vintage expressions from them, including 50, 44, 41, 30, 27, 25, and 18 years old. I'll go out of my way to try any Talisker I can find. That said, few realize Talisker released some distillery-exclusive, cask-strength 25-year-olds years ago. This is one such bottling: a 2001 natural cask strength 25-year-old distillery exclusive, limited to 6000 bottles. At a remarkable 59.9% ABV, it was distilled in 1975, eight years before I was born. I discovered it at Craigellaiche Hotel in Speyside during a lunch stop. On the palate, orange and maritime notes emerge in a wonderfully pleasant way. It's like an orange hard candy, the kind I only got from a birthday piñata as a child. It smells fantastic, though not complex. After the first taste, the aroma revealed vanilla and BBQ sauce. On the palate, it's sheer perfection. Sweet orange candy, salt, a tangerine core; like Fanta. With the second sip, this is a powerful dram, with astringency and acidity from the orange profile. The saltiness integrates beautifully. The finish is epic: smoky, salty, like seawater. It's extremely dry due to the salt. The potent, delicious alcohol content actually numbs your lips. Overall, I'm not sure why I'm taking off three points from this masterpiece. The nose lost a couple of points due to a lack of complexity; it was too direct, despite being very pleasant. A genuinely amazing single malt, I could absolutely take this one to my deserted island. My score is 97 out of 100.
