The year 1953 was seven decades ago. The world back then was entirely different. Not only was worldwide internet nonexistent, but there were no cellphones, and not even color TVs were available to the public. Planet Earth was still recovering from the most brutal war it had endured. In 1953, as Dwight Eisenhower was inaugurated as US president; as Joseph Stalin passed away; as scientists were publishing the structure of DNA; as Rocky Marciano defeated Joe Walcott; as Edmund Percival Hillary scaled Everest; as Elizabeth II was crowned queen of the UK; as Frank Sinatra divorced Ava Gardner; as Hulk Hogan was born; in that precise year, TALISKER DISTILLED THIS SINGLE MALT. This renowned old bottling from Gordon & Macphail, under their "Connoisseur's Choice" labels, was a 24-year-old single malt at 43% ABV. On the nose, it begins with cigarettes mingled with sherry. Maritime notes and BBQ sauce are present. There's a very distinct sherry character. It smells like a fish market with a fully sherried experience. Vanilla ice cream. Quite remarkable. On the palate, it was absolutely flawless. Sherry and red fruits; Salt. Richly sherried yet very maritime, as one would expect from this distillery. It feels velvety; chewing it releases a lovely puff of smoke. Salty water. After the first sip, it presented red fruit jam. Wine-like and full of red fruits for moments, then the saltiness emerges. The aftertaste is beautiful, very smoky. Ashes and cigarettes. It's a salt and smoke explosion. Wonderful flavor; Old books. Extremely satisfying. Overall, this legendary whisky fulfills its promise: a well-crafted, velvety maritime and sherried experience. It's always amazing to taste such rare finds, especially when they come from one of my favorite distilleries. When this bottle is gone, the world will miss it. My rating for this marvel is 97 out of 100. An incredible dram.
