Taconic Distillery Cask Strength Rye Whiskey

Received as a gift from a friend, this bottling is not available in my region. On the nose, this expression offers abundant spice – heavily featuring pepper, rye spice, oak, and mint. The spices are so prominent that the typical sugary notes are obscured. On the palate, immediate salivation occurs, prompting more sips. The spices are not overpowering and actually dissipate quite quickly. The roof of the mouth is coated with a vanilla and caramel note near the teeth, while the mid-palate retains notes of honey and toffee. This whisky can be best described as having two distinct personalities. Upon opening the bottle, there is an off-putting note that can only be described as mineral-like, but this note disappears as the bottle gains oxygen and is allowed to breathe. This bottle improves significantly with aeration; it becomes fantastic once the bottle is about half empty, but initially, the mineral note is quite unpleasant and provides a very different experience. The aroma is reminiscent of green beans. It has a delicate mouthfeel. A green tea characteristic emerges, which is amplified by the addition of water. There's a subtle taste of nougat. A bitter finish persists.

A fantastic combination of rye spice and the perfect level of sweetness. It's hard to believe it's 115 proof. Excellent.
