Sonoma County Distilling Co. West of Kentucky Bourbon No. 1

I acquired a local spirit based on a recommendation while traveling from the West Coast. This bottle from a Sonoma County distillery was bottled in autumn of 2017 (batch #1362 from 320 cases). It presents a nose of cherry and fruitcake that softens to a tone of citrusy, floral honey. Since this is their interpretation of classic Kentucky bourbon (and aged in new, charred American oak), I anticipated a stronger bite but was pleasantly surprised by the more comforting warmth. The flavor profile is reminiscent of rich rum cake soaked in spirits: spices, orange zest, oak with a kick of spiked syrup. With time, smoke deepens the sipping experience like a jazz solo in a dimly lit club. This spirit coats the palate but has a light mouthfeel. The conclusion is rather brief, leaving only a slight allspice tingle on the tongue. I wish it lingered longer, as it's a pleasant drink. 7.5/10

Nearly undrinkable for me straight, earns two stars only because it works as a mixer. It has a peculiar finish I can't quite identify. Let's leave bourbon production to the eastern states. If you appreciate this, as many have stated, please share your thoughts with me! #wanttolikeit

The aroma is intensely sweet, with cherry, vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves, developing a hint of smoke like cedar or pipe tobacco after the initial taste. The palate is rich and smoky, featuring cherry and comforting vanilla, followed by a warm, spicy finish with a peppery kick.

The low alcohol content really hinders this bourbon, making it lack depth and length. Despite this, it's enjoyable, with hints of toasted oak, cherry, and vanilla.

I had hoped to enjoy this whiskey, but it's mediocre at best. You can find better value by choosing something like Eagle Rare 10.

The oak flavor is a little too prominent. It doesn't have the smoothness I prefer. I would not purchase this again.
