Smooth Ambler Contradiction

I received this from a friend some time ago. I've been sipping it occasionally but never fully analyzed it. Tonight is the night while watching game 5 of the Tigers/Mariners playoff decider on a cool, damp evening. Nose: Worn leather greets the nose. A baseball glove. A soft layer of baking spices blends with the leather aromas, along with walnuts, rye, and caramel. A warm introduction. Palate: The palate experiences a spicy tingle with a hint of sweetness. Ground cinnamon mingled with honey, vanilla, Demerara sugar, cherry NyQuil, and pumpernickel. Solid but not deep or flashy. Finish: The conclusion is bitter and contrasts the nose and palate. The drying oak tannins persist for a fair duration, fading along with the baking spices. Overall: A promising nose that invites and welcomes a comfortable palate. Easy to sip. The conclusion doesn't maintain the invitation. The strong bitterness detracts from the palate, just lessening the enjoyment of the dram. A good sipper when you want to simply sip without delving too deeply into your dram, which happens far too often. A grab and go pour. Perfect for a cool autumn evening. [85/100] [Tasted: 10/10/25]

This appears to be a lot of whiskey lately... as one might expect. This was a Christmas present from the brother-in-law. To be fair, if your brother-in-law is giving you whiskey for Christmas, things are going well. I suspect some of these casks are being utilized for an outstanding bourbon-barrel maple syrup endeavor. Speaking of which, maple syrup is precisely what I would incorporate into this in a mixed beverage. This is exceptionally smooth for its alcohol content, with a sweet vanilla malt essence, quite like a creamy milkshake (and with a more viscous texture than others on this platform might suggest). An easy drink, served at room temperature. To provide context, I consumed mine after ice cream and still found it sweet.

Batch no. 395, 46% ABV. Poured directly from the bottle, served neat, allowed to rest for over 20 minutes. Maraschino cherry and vanilla on the nose, after the initial ethanol impact. The taste is rich with vanilla leading, followed by a floral note with cinnamon. The finish is medium-to-long. Oak char and rye spice are very apparent on the finish with black pepper. The warming sensation begins early and persists. Given the contrasting mash bills of high rye versus wheat, the complexity present is quite well-balanced, though slightly unrefined. Adding a small amount of water revealed caramel and brown sugar on the nose, enhanced the vanilla & cinnamon in the taste, and softened the finish. At less than $40, I could incorporate this into my regular rotation as a neat pour that way.

Alright. Notes of oak, pepper, and rye spice with hints of caramel and subtle cherry. A decent bourbon, though not particularly remarkable. The finish is moderate in length and the texture is acceptable. I might revisit it another time in a Glencairn glass. I rate using the scale below. The distiller uses a 5-point scale, while I use a 10-point scale. I'm confident you can figure out the conversion! 1. Awful - So unpleasant I discarded it. 2. Unsatisfactory - I would avoid drinking this. 3. Flawed - Contains several imperfections. 4. Subpar - Drinkable, but I prefer many other options. 5. Average - Neither good nor bad. 6. Above average - Better than typical. 7. Commendable - Significantly better than average. 8. Outstanding - Exceptional quality. 9. Phenomenal - A personal best. 10. Flawless

Nose of rye, leather, cinnamon, and a hint of herbs, with notes of sawdust and nuts. The palate is in the middle of the bourbon spectrum: caramel, honey, cherry, bread dough, vanilla, apple, and sagebrush. It's not light and floral, nor dark and autumnal; it evokes late summer. Intriguing and likable. Finish brings a lumberyard impression with baking spices, pepper, and peanuts. Regarding the professional assessment, if I tasted this during the Christmas season, I would be somewhat disappointed.

I really like this for sipping neat, but I'm not including much detail about flavor profiles, notes, and finish because, as of now, my Bourbon/Whiskey palate is still quite undeveloped, with over 50 tracked tastings but fewer than 100 as of 2022. (That's not all consumed, just all appreciated outside of shots and mixers).
