Signatory Vintage Cask Strength Speyside 18yo 2005

This bottling from Signatory Vintage's Cask Strength Collection is simply brilliant. It comes from a highly regarded, unnamed Speyside distillery with nearly two centuries of exceptional single malt Scotch whisky production, starting with the letter M. Distilled on July 11, 2005, it spent 18 years in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry Butt before being bottled at a formidable 57.7% ABV. Its price point is comparable to Macallan 18 Sherry Oak, which is bottled at a much lower 43% ABV – a disappointing difference. For an authentic taste experience, try this if you can find it. While expensive, it's well worth the cost. Adding a few drops of water will reveal the unadulterated spirit this exceptional distillery can deliver when matured in superior casks. Like other releases in this series, it's presented un-chillfiltered and without added color. Nose: A rich fruity layer of plums, raisins (infused in rum), and marmalade, complemented by hints of maple syrup and red berries. Further notes include milk chocolate, subtle hay, and candied ginger. It also presents hazelnuts, aged oak, and orange peels, with underlying savory tobacco notes. A refined blend of classic sherry characteristics. Palate: At full cask strength, it's robust – a true "sherry bomb." Flavors of dried figs and raisins mingle with darker notes of cold coffee and black tea, along with black peppercorns and stem ginger. Pipe tobacco emerges, alongside chocolate, a touch of sherry brandy, and a distinct combination of herbal notes with a hint of sourness. A very subtle mentholated edge and leathery undertones are also present. Finish: Long, with notes of caramelized nuts, red berries, black coffee, high-quality dark chocolate, and brown sugar. While many of these undisclosed Macallan bottlings have been good, this one is truly exceptional. It evokes memories of the rich 105s and early 2000s A'Bunadhs. Like others at this strength, it can be overwhelming if you're unaccustomed to full cask strength, but water helps to tame it and unlock its many layers. I'm saving up to purchase another bottle for my retirement collection before they become unavailable.
