Shieldaig 18 Year Speyside Single Malt

This is a 'mystery whisky' from Ian MacLeod, labeled as 'undisclosed distillery'. Bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, with a deep gold color. The nose has some sherry notes, blackberry marmalade, pepper, wet forest, cola, and a bit of honey. The palate is actually quite good and very balanced. It starts with sherry and caramel, quickly shifting to a mildly spicy, oaky tangerine note. The finish is long and ashy with bonfire characteristics, not peaty. It's not an earthy smoke flavor. This is a pretty decent dram, and I believe the bottle is around 43 dollars for an 18-year-old. (I think they are trying to introduce the product to the market). I rate this dram a solid 93 out of 100, very nice.

I detect honey, pear, and a subtle hint of apple on the nose. Certainly no smoke, contrary to what a few others have mentioned, though this can differ by year. On the palate, it's smooth and buttery with a touch of spice. The finish is rather short with a bit of minerality and some roughness. Overall, it's a decent dram, but lacks complexity. It's smooth and easy to drink. It would likely perform best in mixed beverages.

A rich, Single Malt from Speyside, Scotland aged in oak barrels for at least 18 years. It has a rich birth with notes of pear drops, heather & stewed figs; a balanced life adds notes of citrus, barley, herbs & oak; that led to a long & spicy death. The smell is quite harsh, bringing to mind something like JW red to black label, with strong alcohol, some fruit, and honey sweetness, but overall not very pleasing. The aromas set my expectations low, but on the palate, it's better than anticipated. Smooth, with notes of vanilla, caramel, honey, stone fruit, and leather. The finish is sweet with vanilla.

It's a great price, but honestly, it's just not that good. Perhaps suitable for a gathering or for those who care more about the age statement than the actual taste. It's smooth and well-rounded, making it easy to approach, but it lacks definition and seems unfocused. Best to mix it with soda and move on.

The nose is faint and sweet. The taste is pleasant and fruity, with red apples. The finish is long and sweet. Overall, it's quite underwhelming; there's nothing to dislike, but nothing to make it stand out. I suppose getting an 18-year-old whiskey for cheap is cool, but I'd prefer any of the other $40 12-year-old whiskeys over this one.
