An unbranded Laphroaig, aged 31 years in a refill hogshead – a blissful moment transporting me to the windswept coasts of Islay. It has a briny, mineral, and distinctly oceanic character. The peat smoke on the nose has mellowed, revealing notes of lemon zest, tobacco, and oysters. On the palate, pineapple, mango, and grapefruit contend with ginger, herbs, and a dry peatiness. The mouthfeel is intense. Peppery, savory, and slightly salty, the glowing embers of a long and satisfying finish slowly recede as the sun sets over Islay.
