Samaroli Cuba 1998

I generally do not enjoy rum. My prior experiences have been akin to consuming pure sugar. However, encountering a sample of a Caroni changed my perspective. Then, I tried a small sample of this remarkable spirit. Firstly, due to the relationship between the US and Cuba, obtaining it here is nearly impossible. It's theoretically contraband, much like Cuban cigars or other goods from the island (though tourists can acquire limited items, mass distribution is non-existent). This 'illegal' status adds to its allure. But truthfully, even without that, this spirit rivals the Caroni. Its aroma presents a powerful bouquet of brown sugar and berries. The mouthfeel is rich, similar to the Caroni. It also offers notes of pipe tobacco, oak, and berries. While the Caroni exhibits greater complexity, akin to Scotch, this spirit leans towards a more floral and tobacco-forward profile. The preference between an Islay (Caroni) or Speyside (Cuban) style is purely subjective. It's unfortunate I will likely never have the opportunity to purchase a bottle. However, I am grateful to have received a small sample to taste, and a pour to take home for a more tranquil tasting experience at a later time.
