Manuel Alonzo 4.0

The nose presents strawberry, dark pumpernickel rye, a hint of menthol cherry cough drop, and toasted anise. The ethanol aroma fades, revealing a scent that could be appreciated for an extended period. The taste is creamy and delightful, rich with baking spices, a touch of dark chocolate, bright strawberry, rye bread, and a subtle honey note leading into the finish. The finish truly highlights the influence of the armagnac, imparting notes of prune and velvety butter, along with pleasant oakiness. It's warming without being overwhelming, despite its higher proof. Overall, this is an exceptional bottle and an overlooked gem. Previous experiences with other products from that distillery were satisfactory but unremarkable; however, this one is remarkably interesting and complex. It ranks among the top five whiskies (bourbon or rye) tasted this year and is one of the finest ryes finished in another spirit barrel that I've encountered. While some early bottles of a certain popular rye come close, and I do enjoy another distillery's finished rye when craving sweetness, this one is a full-flavored, spirited experience with a unique twist, rather than simply sweetening the rye. It maintains its spiciness without becoming overly candied by the finishing barrel. I'm a big fan! It was well worth the price and exceeded expectations.
