About this bottle

The Rough Riders, led by Teddy Roosevelt, were the first Volunteer Cavalry of the United States, formed in 1898 for the Spanish-American War. Long Island Spirits produces Rough Rider "The Big Stick," a rye whiskey made from 95% Long Island-grown winter rye and 5% malted barley. Fermentation occurs over 8-11 days using champagne yeast. Following a double distillation, the spirit ages for a minimum of one year in new American oak barrels measuring 30 gallons. It is presented at cask strength. Despite being produced in the US, the spelling "whisky" is used on the label.

Are you seeking a smooth, high-proof rye? This isn't it. The label accurately describes it: rough. It somehow encapsulates the flavors, aromas, and intensity of the Long Island experience in a bottle.

Gerard Witherspoon 4.5

A strong cask strength rye that’s not from MGP is uncommon. Despite being 120 proof, it doesn't hit hard. The taste has plenty of character.

Makenna Singletary 2.0

This producer has offered some enjoyable spirits over the years, but this one is not among them!

Addison Payton 3.5

Indeed, a strong presence! Intense spicy rye notes and goes wonderfully with that show about history on TV.

Misty Nguyen

Vanilla and caramel scents greet you. It finishes with a spicy kick that lingers.

In my opinion, this is easily among the finest ryes available in the US.
