The aroma starts with a powerful blast of funky blue cheese, followed by white wine vinegar drizzled over grilled green beans, eggplant, and fried yucca root. Then come fruits of salted mango, papaya, and fried bananas, transitioning to a tangy, smoky barbecue-sauced platter of short ribs with a moderate alcohol burn. The taste presents a medium, airy mouthfeel, beginning with charred lemon and lime that become moderately bitter, slowly fading to grilled vegetables like olive oil-covered Portobello, eggplant, and red bell pepper topped with blue cheese crumbles. This is followed by fruits of mango sorbet, mandarin orange zest, and caramelized bananas, transitioning to a tangy, smoky barbecue-sauced platter of short ribs with a moderate alcohol burn. The finish is medium in length, featuring mango sorbet, caramelized bananas, lime zest, olive oil-coated grilled portobellos, caramelized onions, and tangy barbecue sauce short ribs. This is an outstanding mezcal that successfully balances grilled vegetables, blue cheese, citrus, and barbecue meat, but it leans towards a higher level of bitterness and sourness at the start of the taste than I prefer. At approximately $120, I would much rather purchase a Del Maguey Arroqueno for a similar price, but I am still very pleased to have this fruit platter of barbecued meat and vegetables in my collection.

About this bottle
"King of the Countryside" is the meaning of Rey Campero in Spanish. This name reflects a gentle leadership with a dedication to local sustainability; for every agave plant harvested for their spirits, others are planted. This mezcal is made from wild tepextate agave, which has matured for an impressive 15 to 18 years before harvest. After roasting and crushing with a mule-pulled tahona, it ferments with wild yeast in the open air and is then double-distilled in alembic stills.
