To simplify its essence, imagine the aroma of sweet feed grain familiar to those around horses and cattle. This whiskey delivers a taste that aligns with that scent, as if sweet feed were distilled into a spirit. It features sweet molasses and grain. Nose: Rich butterscotch, hay, green grains, wildflower honey with lemon, black tea leaves, tea olive blossoms, fennel Palate: Honey and butterscotch erupt into peppery spice, followed by fresh hay and green rye on the mid-palate, herbal mint, and then a secondary surge of rye spice saturates the entire mouth. Finish: Leather, sour honey, cracked pepper, bread crust. It's certainly a young spirit, but it offers a fun and unconventional exploration. Unlike a typical rye, it's more unique with prominent Texas character and oak influence.

About this bottle
This grain-to-bottle whiskey is crafted using 100% rye and matures in previously used bourbon barrels; consequently, it is technically classified as a whiskey made from rye mash rather than a rye whiskey. It undergoes aging for 13 months in small barrels. In line with other releases in their Small Caliber series, this bottling is named after a firearm, specifically the Walker Colt .44, which itself is named for Captain Samuel H Walker of the Texas Rangers and the firearms inventor Samuel Colt. This product is sold in a 375 ml bottle.

A multifaceted Texas Rye Whiskey from Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling, aged for 19 months in used Bourbon barrels. It begins aromatically with notes of cinnamon, vanilla, toffee, and subtle hints of mint & spices; its bold character adds notes of clove, nutmeg, currant & tobacco; culminating in a long & complex conclusion with a trace of bread crust & caramel. July 2020 / August 2022
Appearance: Pale amber. Aroma: Dried blossoms, lavender, rosehip oil, gummy candy, gelatin, mustard seed, hints of biscotti. Palate: Very corky, remains quite herbal, never reaching caramelized notes, grassy, English tea. Finish: Brief, tasting of hay, grass, and green elements. Texture: Smooth, thin, feels pleasant, not dynamic, lacks development.
Definitely not my preference. Made entirely from rye. It doesn't present as typical rye, instead offering more of a hay-like or feed grain profile with an overall rye character. There's some unusual funk, like slightly stale grain dust. The taste and mouthfeel are sharp. Almost empty? A very immature grain flavor.
Batch 16, Bottle 394. Season: Winter 2015. Aged for 14 months under the Texas sun. This is one of my favorites. I truly appreciate their products.
I don't care for the spicy cinnamon finish. It tastes very young. This isn't for me. I'm glad I sampled it, though. It won't be part of my collection.
