Port Ellen 1980 35 Year Rare Old (Gordon & MacPhail)

I used to visit a distillery bar in another town when I worked there. I inquired about Port Ellen or Brora, and the bartender stated he stopped stocking it because the bottles that were somewhat affordable, meaning under $700 USD, were not very good, didn't last, and he removed the last bottle from the shelf after two weeks because he ethically could not sell it. Years later, I managed to get a sample of a bottle costing over $1000 USD for a reasonable $50 USD. Yes, it was a nice drink, but honestly, I preferred the version Johnnie Walker created for their Blue Label blend. Nevertheless, it's pleasant to sit in the sun sipping a piece of history, and it is a delightful dram, just not astonishing. Sweet vanilla, fennel, cooked cabbage, and gasoline, very light and well-balanced, and better than the flavor descriptions suggest. You're definitely drinking it and evaluating it based on what it represents rather than the taste itself. Rest in peace, Port Ellen; I anticipate your revival. Hmm, I notice I've reached the number of the beast in tastes... not sure if that's unlucky, so I'll keep tasting!
