The taste of the whisky is full, soft, and well-balanced, with notes of caramel, peat smoke, tropical fruits, candied fruit, toffee, walnut, coconut, vanilla cream, lemon, honey, smoked oysters, and sun-warmed sand. 'Port Charlotte' 10 Years Old is a Scotch single malt whisky with a phenolic content of 40 ppm, showcasing a blend of Bruichladdich's floral elegance with heavy peat notes. The whisky was aged for 10 years in the village of Port Charlotte on the island of Islay. American ex-bourbon casks (first and second fill) and French second-fill wine casks were used for aging. The Bruichladdich distillery was founded in 1881 on Islay, on the shore of Loch Indaal. Its name translates from Gaelic as 'The Leaning Coast', and it is Scotland's westernmost distillery. The company experienced several periods of stagnation and decline before being bought out in 2001 by Jim McEwan and several other investors. The new owners of the Bruichladdich distillery decided against adding caramel and using chill-filtration, opting for an optimal strength of 46% ABV and creating a unique whisky. They also developed a new packaging and label design, giving the product an even more modern look. The long breaks in the distillery's operation have preserved elements of the original Scottish distilleries. Cast-iron mash tuns for open-air spirit mixing, an antique forged still, American pine washbacks, and aging cellars remain. Learned about this brand from an interesting documentary called Water of Life. Fantastic dram! I sampled it a few times before writing my assessment. Despite being non-chill filtered, it has a pale yellow hue with thin trails. At 50% ABV, I anticipated more substantial legs. On the nose, a roasted salty aroma emerges immediately with applewood smoked bacon and a faint medicinal scent in the background. With a few drops of water, hints of orange and lime appear alongside the smokiness. On the palate, it's smoky. Citrus notes accompany the peaty flavors. There's also a taste reminiscent of BBQ burnt ends, specifically like brisket fat. It leans more salty than sweet, but a subtle sweetness emerges like that from sugar cane distilled cachaça. Quite good overall with a lingering finish that leans towards citrus and smoke. Wonderful whisky, delightful and satisfying!

NEAT AROMA - Bursting with citrus. Lemon is dominant over orange zest, with both present alongside hay, light honey, and vanilla. The peat isn't sweet; it smells like campfire embers. TASTE - Abundant lemon zest again, leading to orange peel. Honey and vanilla appear mid-palate but are quickly overwhelmed by campfire ash-like peat. Ginger is also detected. The texture is smooth and somewhat substantial. FINISH - The honey and vanilla briefly reappear at the end. SHOULD YOU BUY? Yes. An excellent entry into peated spirits. It feels very well-balanced. WILL YOU BUY AGAIN? Yes. It's neither simple nor overly complex, but it's enjoyable for what it is.

Aroma: ocean mist, a more vibrant style of peat, vanilla, tangerine zest, grains. Subtle notes of French wine cask heat present. There's a scent of wood finish/paint thinner. Beach bonfire aroma. Taste: full-bodied and profound, yet quite lively. Strong citrus, significant saltiness, with a foundation of comforting baking spice as it moves to the finish. Vanilla, lemon candy, salted caramels. It's clearly peaty, but the other notes are very well matched with it. It becomes most apparent near the end. Finish: warmth intensifies in the back of the throat, peat endures, baking spice and wood tannins settle nicely in the mouth

Nose: moderate smoke and dank peat, but there's a lot more sweetness here than I recall. Creamy vanilla, orange peel, sweet oak. Salt spray, seaweed. Palate: malty sweetness, moderate heat, floral and fruity. Peat reek is present but balanced against a bright zip of citrus and citrus peel. Creamy texture. A splash of seawater as it transitions to the finish. Finish: lingering, here's where the peat phenols become more prominent. A slightly oily and numbing medicinal quality on the tongue, substantial oak tannins here. Strong leather.
