Plymouth Gin

Score: 14/23 Nose: A bit muted and slick. Fairly sweet with herbal notes. Not a lot going on. Possibly citrus, maybe a whisper of peanut, surprisingly. Palate: This is mellow and uncomplicated. It's similar to another spirit, but sadly lacking in character. It's somewhat slick, sweet, and mellow. I detect some juniper and other tastes, but it's a little too subdued and indistinct for my preference. There's candied citrus and the alcohol is noticeable, although it's quite clean. I also pick up that faint peanut essence. The smoothness here is somewhat like the pleasant inoffensiveness of Aberlour. I suspect there's good depth present, but it's all just a little too subtle for me. There's a subtle bitter base with maybe a hint of licorice, reminiscent of a certain genever in a good way. Some minerality is also there. The balance is good, though I typically prefer my gin a bit drier. Finish: The alcohol is more apparent, and the bitter herbal quality and minerality persist. - Summary - When compared directly, this might be more aged while the other is bolder, livelier, slightly harsher, and more fully formed. This has grown on me, so I'm rating it closer to the other than I anticipated. I was originally considering an 11 or 12, but I'm now thinking more in the 13 to 15 range. I believe the price and alcohol content make this a poor choice compared to other options, but it's solid. I will enjoy the remainder of the bottle. I'm settling on a 14. I was wavering between 14 and 15, but since I spent a lot of time in the lower scores, I decided to go with 14.

Aroma: Fresh citrus, more akin to lemon juice than lemon peel, with easily identifiable juniper, caraway seed, and coriander. The aroma has a warm, subtle spice quality. Taste: Mildly peppery juniper, citrus, and warm earthy spices. The texture is outstanding, possessing an oily characteristic that contributes to a smoother and more rounded profile than most gins. The palate is rich, satisfying, and exhibits excellent balance. Finish: Medium. Citrus and spice notes with a fruity undertone in the aftertaste. Unlike many gins introduced recently, Plymouth doesn't aim to overwhelm the palate with excessive juniper or senses with a multitude of botanicals. The recipe is reportedly straightforward, featuring only seven ingredients, all distilled in a "one shot" process, similar to London Dry gin. In essence, Plymouth is a type of London dry gin, simply produced in Plymouth. "Plymouth Gin" was historically a protected regional designation exclusively for gin made in Plymouth, England, but this is no longer the case. The aroma and flavor are exceptionally balanced, but its most remarkable quality is its texture. The mouthfeel is rich, creamy, and full, making the palate seem more intense than it truly is. The outcome is a gin that is both full and satisfying, yet also delicate and relaxed. While I genuinely enjoy exploring new gins, I sometimes find myself returning to Plymouth, and it's often present in my bar. "Very Good": 85/100 (4 stars)

I was eager to sample this renowned gin and took a couple of sips. It's considerably sweeter than anticipated and also more fruity. There's not a large amount of juniper, but there's a surprisingly strong prickly, spicy character. It also has a distinct minerality. I'd be interested in tasting this alongside Ford's, which seems like the most comparable option. This isn't intensely flavored, and the tastes blend somewhat (however, I've just prepared some strongly flavored soup, so my palate might be compromised). I find this appealing, but I'll need to conduct a proper tasting to determine if I truly like it. At the very least, I'll know if it's worth the price. Based on this initial taste, I approve, although it's not the most resounding endorsement.

I had the opportunity to sample this wonderful London Dry Gin, and it was precisely to my liking. It's smooth and easy to drink, with no black pepper finish. It has a mild juniper and citrus nose and isn't harsh when sipped neat. The finish is soft with a hint of citrus and is very pleasant. It makes an excellent Gin and Tonic, even with inexpensive tonic water, and with premium tonic water, it's out of this world. Crafting a Gimlet as demonstrated above also yields wonderful results. I'm looking forward to trying it in a Martini as well. I have no negative remarks about this gin. I'm also eager to try the navy strength version. I found this for under $20, making it an absolute bargain, and if you're a gin enthusiast, you should definitely give it a try.

A crisp gin, both in style and brand, produced by a specific distillery using grain spirit and 7 botanicals: juniper berries, coriander seed, orange & lemon peel, green cardamom, angelica root & orris root. After distillation, the gin is bottled at 41.2% ABV. It has an aromatic beginning with notes of grain, berries, earth, seeds, herbs & spices; a crisp & full middle adds notes of mint, citrus & juniper; leading to a long & balanced end with notes of coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, angelica root & orris root.

Excellent gin with a rich history. This gin was designed for consumption aboard a ship at sea, intended to mask the taste of salt for sailors on long voyages. Consequently, it possesses very strong and bold flavors of coriander, mint, and citrus.
