About this bottle

Pinhook annually introduces new vintages of bourbons and ryes, each named after a thoroughbred horse. The vertical series is designed to span nine years, featuring a blend of barrels aged between 4 and 12 years. This rye whiskey, the second release in this specific series after the four-year version, features a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. It is aged for 5 years and bottled at 103 proof.

Opened 60 days ago. Smell: Brown sugar, cooked sugar, dark fruit, dried grapes, strong baking spices, hide, cigar leaf, a whisper of dill, and low ethanol. This aroma is complete. Taste: Smooth dark fruit stew, sweet wood and leather, vanilla brown sugar swirl, gingerbread cookie, and almost no ethanol on the tip of the tongue. A moderately long finish with rye baking spices, brown sugar, dried grapes, and dry tannins on the rear. To be honest, I'm amazed by this rye. A brand released product in NC this year (?), but I skipped buying the base bourbon and rye at prices near $40. However, their Vertical series and High Proof Bourbon are just $10 more, and the Verticals specifically get great reviews. I waited for this one, and I'm thrilled I did. It's among the best things I've experienced in 2021. Strangely, this reminds me of a specific expression. It has many of those dark fruit and leather notes with a substantial hit of rye spice. If you spot this, get it. It's far superior to most ryes in this price bracket.

It has a light body. An acceptable sipper, but nothing truly remarkable. This is a store pick from Binnys.
