Leta Obrien 4.0

Appearance: Russet red. Aroma: Fortified wine and spices, notably cinnamon and clove. Flavor & Texture: Consistently sweet, with a clear fortified wine base, possibly port, sherry, a red wine liqueur, or even brandy. The wine serves as the foundation, while bright, hot spices are the dominant flavors. Hot cinnamon and clove define the palate. The texture is full-bodied but not syrupy. Tentura is a spiced wine liqueur originating from Patras, western central Greece, with a history spanning over 600 years. This specific brand has been produced for more than a century, and several brands are currently available. I had not encountered it before purchasing this bottle from a Greek artisanal food shop in Sydney last year. The world continually offers surprising food and drink experiences; exploration is key! Upon initial nosing, deciphering the aromas took a moment, but it was an engagingly unique experience. The first taste was agreeable yet puzzling. I had anticipated something more subtle, but this liqueur is bold, assertive, and confidently spicy. The profile combines two elements: the sweet, textured red wine (this brand uses mavrodafni, similar to Commandria) and hot baking spices. It was intriguing and felt familiar until, halfway through my second glass, it clicked. This liqueur is akin to what Fireball would taste like if it were a premium product. While not disparaging Fireball, it's a mass-produced beverage with artificial flavors in industrial spirit, whereas this is a refined, port-like wine infused with fine spices. If you enjoy the aroma and taste of Fireball as a liqueur (beyond just drinking it for dares at parties), I highly recommend seeking this out – you will love it. I've been savoring a small glass as a digestif and now anticipate it post-meal. It's also recommended served chilled in small doses or on the rocks, or added to espresso for a caffè corretto. It's excellent, and I'm eager to try other tentura brands. "Very Good": 85/100 (4 stars)
