Oregon Spirit Single Barrel Bottled In Bond Bourbon

Tonight's Review: Celebrating Wheat, Wonder, and Whimsy! Friends, fellow whiskey enthusiasts, prepare yourselves! We're diving into the world of Oregon Spirit Distillers from Bend, Oregon. Founded in 2009 by Brad and Kathy Irwin, this distillery focuses on grain-to-glass production, using 95% Oregon-grown grains and Cascade Mountain water. We're examining Barrel 180921#12, a Single Barrel, Bottle-in-Bond, and Wheat Whiskey. It's also labeled 'Small Batch Distilled,' which seemed a bit redundant given its single barrel status. It has an MSRP of $60, but I purchased it for $38.24 at Total Wine in Columbia, SC. Aged for 5 years and bottled at 100 proof, this whiskey was sampled neat in a Glencairn at the Top of Georgia Airstream Park near Helen. Mashbill: 74% wheat, 18% rye, 8% malted barley — with no corn. Nose: Reminiscent of fresh bread, with white grape, nougat, and a touch of white pepper for spice. It's like a wheat farm picnic with a side of spirits. Taste: Begins with a warm bakery sensation, followed by a subtle white pepper and rye spice, indicating its strength. It finishes with notes of rose petals and a hint of something medicinal, though not unpleasant. Finish: It's long and lingering, featuring oak and white pepper. Sweetness and spice engage in a pleasing balance. Verdict: An easy sipper and an interesting flavor experience, but ultimately just okay. This is slightly disappointing given its credentials (BiB + Single Barrel + Wheat). For $38, it's a fair purchase, but at full MSRP, I'd expect more. I'm eager to see what a longer-aged version from Brad and Kathy would be like—if you have a 9-year barrel, contact me. Color: copper. Nose: vanilla, caramel, plum or grapes (uncertain which), a significant amount of oak, and toffee. Palate: brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, maple, and a hint of rye spice and oak. Finish: medium. The sweetness from the brown sugar and caramel fades into the rye spice. Overall: I was unaware of this bourbon until recently introduced to it. It's a great choice for an easy sipper, offering a blend of sweet and spicy notes without being overly hot. It's not a profound or intricate bourbon, but it is a flavorful single barrel, comparable to Blanton's.

Nose: certainly oak, possibly some fruit and chocolate too Palate: initially cherry? Also some kind of leather note I’m not fond of (although not exactly sure what this really is...) Finish: oak, spice, although the spice softened after the first sip and became much softer/smoother Every time I drink this I think something different. More than once I’ve found this repulsive, but today is one of those days where I’m finding the soft, straightforward flavor pretty nice. Not a bad bourbon, but for the price it’s a very poor value to me.

This is a delightful four-grain spirit from a grain-to-glass distillery in Oregon. Aroma: Kettle corn, vanilla, surprisingly deep oak notes for its relatively young age. Palate: Brown sugar, maple syrup, a blend of simple syrup and earthy rye bread, ample toffee, and a pleasing mouthfeel that coats the entire palate. Finish: Toffee, candied peanuts, vanilla, and more brown sugar. I think this single barrel is well worth the cost (at least this particular barrel).

My initial impression was that this was a wheated bourbon due to flavor notes reminiscent of Maker's Mark. I was surprised to learn it's a four-grain bourbon with only a small amount of wheat. It has a very pleasant buttery creaminess. This is certainly one of the more distinctive bourbons I've encountered, and I'm really enjoying it.

On the nose, I detect baking spice, sugary raisins, and possibly rye. These flavors carry through to the palate, along with pear and earthiness.
