Opulence Port Dundas 21 Years Single Grain Scotch (Raising Glasses)

Review #083: This is a single grain Scotch whisky at 55.7% ABV, aged for 21 years and finished for 6 months in an Oloroso quarter cask. Tasted after another spirit, it presents a mahogany color. Swirling shows a thick line clinging to the glass, beading up quickly, but the legs form slowly. The nose is delicate, sweet, and fruity, subtle yet warming, evoking freshly baked bread and jam, with creamy butter, coconut, and cinnamon notes. The palate is thick, syrupy, and almost chewy. The initial sip is quite hot, but subsequent sips reveal raisins, figs, stewed apples, vanilla, a touch of nutmeg, and mango. The finish is medium in length but delivers a complex array of flavors. It starts zesty and spicy with lemon peel and chili peppers, then mellows with mixed nuts and a hint of orange citrus, gradually becoming creamier and ending semi-dry with vanilla as the final taste. Adding a few drops of water made no noticeable difference. Overall score: 81/100. Final thoughts: Tasting a sample from a distillery that has closed evokes mixed feelings, as less of its product will be available. I haven't encountered many single grains before, and those I have tried were generally disappointing. This one, however, stands out as the first I've truly enjoyed. Considering its retail price of just over $100, it represents excellent value and is worth purchasing. A gifted sample from my brother. Recommendation: Yes. Purchase: Yes.
