Oola Waitsburg Bourbon

Aroma: Pungent herbal vanilla, aged barrel scent like a rickhouse, mild cinnamon sweetness. Flavor: Sharp cinnamon heat, unusual sweet vanilla, oaky mint, peppery caramel, a touch of sweet rye bread and maple syrup. Finish: Lingering spice, the sweet herbal peculiarity remains, dry oak sweetness like artificial sweetener, rye bread and maple syrup. Rating: 70/100 Closing Remarks: I'm uncertain if my batch is older than what's listed on their site, but I didn't get any cherry notes they mentioned. My impression is that this is a rather young bourbon, and I detect a significant amount of young oak and a bite from the spirit. It seemed like a mix of young and slightly older components, as I noticed the youthful aspect alongside a smooth, mild, maple syrup-like texture. It's not bad straight, but I believe it would be best suited for a cocktail to help soften the rawness of the young spirit.

Nose: Mostly oak with a hint of vanilla and perhaps some floral notes, though not very pronounced. Ethanol was also present. Palate: Rather thin, with flavors primarily of spicy vanilla and caramel. Finish: Quite a harsh alcoholic sensation, with little else noticeable to me. This bottle is about half empty and has had some time to aerate. It's not awful, but lacks complexity and I particularly dislike the sharp aftertaste. I've experienced barrel-proof spirits with less bite on the finish. It's decent for mixing, but as a neat bourbon, it's not my preference. I bought it on impulse and likely won't repurchase, especially considering the cost.

This bourbon is my absolute favorite, without question. The rye content, which is a bit higher than typical, is evident and leaves a pleasant, distinctive finish. I've never had a bourbon like this before.

Initially smelled like soap and rubbing alcohol, specifically ivory soap. The palate felt quite smooth given the proof, but it was one-dimensional with a minimal finish. It continued to taste soapy.

A thin mouthfeel followed by a short finish. I had hoped for more complexity, but the experience is fleeting overall. Grateful it was a gift.

Nose smells young and hot, with notes of tropical citrus and caramel. The taste is mildly sweet with baking spices and earthy undertones. Heat level is medium to strong.
