This isn't the same as the current Old Rip Van Winkle 10yo; this bottle is from the 90s or early 2000s. The bottle's shape is notably different – quite rectangular compared to the current, somewhat rounded design. The alcohol content is identical at 53.5% ABV, but the aromas and flavors diverge. Which is superior? Let's find out.... On the nose: A metallic scent, a copper note characteristic of Pappy's bourbons. Banana, Prunes. Pungent metal. Steel. Faint cherry hints. Vanilla; After the initial taste, notes of spent matches and brown sugar emerge. Quite intriguing. On the palate: Banana, spicy pepper, and vanilla, but all very refined. Burning hay smoke. An excellent finish. Vanilla, banana split, ice cream. Spices like wasabi and metallic notes. Overall, this is also a magnificent bourbon whiskey, but when compared to the contemporary version, it's slightly distinct, and I favor the current release. A score of 97 out of 100; a superb whiskey.

The aroma has notes of butterscotch and light vanilla. The palate is complex with butterscotch, maple, and a touch of spice.

Perhaps too refined for most people, but I'm glad I obtained some. It converted me into a bourbon enthusiast.
