Old Pepper Distillery Single Barrel Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey

Barrel #: 19-156 I often find myself preferring the barrel strength 1776 from Old Pepper over their namesake rye, as it offers a more consistent flavor for a considerably lower price. However, given that the 1776 is typically only available at the distillery (aside from the diluted version), I sought a bottle with a distinct flavor profile to complement it on my shelf. After sampling three different single barrels offered at the distillery at the time, I selected this one. It's a bit disappointing that it's not particularly memorable, especially considering I only tried it last week. Nevertheless, with a mashbill of 100% rye (two consecutive batches, excellent!), it's difficult to dislike, and with a clear palate, I'm eager to examine it more closely. A deep brown hue, reminiscent of walnut and rich caramel with a hint of molasses; a pleasant color for a mere four years in the traditional 52-gallon barrel. The rye presents a somewhat unrefined aroma, with noticeable but undeveloped spice, accompanied by a distinct scent of fresh berries, red grapes, and a touch of lemon zest. A subtle sweet, floral note lingers behind these, but a gentle waft of air from the room reveals more of the young, mildly spiced grain in its straightforward character. The initial mouthfeel is light, quickly building to a pleasant warmth in a short span. Without additional aeration, the taste mirrors the berry and mild citrus notes from the nose, while the inherent spice gently massages the gum line without overwhelming. However, with just a slight breath, cinnamon reminiscent of Red Hots (my preferred expression of rye spice) emerges, though it quickly fades. I'm uncertain if the warmth accumulates due to air exposure or repeated sips, until I recall that 116.6 proof is substantial, despite not detecting such high ethanol levels in scent or taste until now. I also perceive more malt characteristics as I approach the end of the glass. I'm pleased I had the opportunity to taste this again with an empty palate, as I believe this barrel merges the anticipated flavors of classic rye grain with subtle berry and citrus notes, which are less common from rye. It's not a groundbreaking bottle by any means, but it effectively showcases and utilizes 100% rye from a distillery committed to this grain. The price is reasonable, low enough for premium mixing but substantial enough to warrant sipping neat. I would appreciate seeing this offered as a barrel selection in reputable shops or bars (and I might have encountered it unknowingly), and now that this specific barrel has provided a positive experience, I'll be on the lookout for additional barrel offerings to explore further.

Good flavor, but quite spicy and young with very little depth on the finish.
