I've encountered mixed opinions on the Old Hickory brand, but decided to try this one as it was a more limited release. The nose is unmistakably rye, with an almost pine-like scent at the edges. The initial sip is somewhat lacking in strong flavor. Some classic rye pepper emerges, but without a significant bite. The finish is rather short with a mild burn. This is an interesting one. If you appreciate classic rye but find many too harsh, you might really like this dram; it could even be considered quite smooth for a rye blend. Personally, I prefer a bit more flavor and a fuller body, but you could certainly do worse with your drink.

MGP 95% rye. 96 proof, aged 6 years. A gift. Aroma: spicy: leather, coffee, mint, licorice. New oak and classic rye are present. Palate: Fine, elegant. An easier sipper. Less spice, less warmth, less intensity than I anticipated. This is probably why it's not widely discussed; it costs $60+ and doesn't truly stand out. It's like a Dickel, but not significantly better to justify an additional $35. In my opinion, Sagamore, Wilderness Trail, Boone County, and Jefferson's all offer superior products.

It's 95% MGP, which isn't a bad thing, but it tastes as expected, with upfront pine, classic MGP rye on the palate, and a slightly bitter finish. Like its name suggests, the bottle looks good, and it's great in a cocktail.

Christina Hathaway 3.5

Aroma: rye, pear, char, oak, grass, and herbs. Spicy taste, heavy rye, oak, grass, and pear. Hotter than anticipated.

Ciera Babcock 3.5

Initially a lot of pine, then a standard rye flavor.
