About this bottle

While most bourbon is aged in white oak from the Ozarks, the only requirement is the use of new, charred oak containers, with no specific oak type mandated. The Old Charter Oak series showcases bourbon aged in different oak varietals sourced from various regions, countries, and ages, including century-old oaks. This specific bottling features oak from Mongolia, selected by master distiller Harlen Wheatley. The oak barrels arrived at Buffalo Trace in 2008 and were filled with Buffalo Trace mash bill #1. After aging for 10 years, Old Charter Oak Mongolian Oak became available in December 2018 in limited quantities, with two new releases planned for 2019 and periodic future rollouts.

I'm not usually a big bourbon fan, preferring my ryes and Islay scotch, but I saw this earlier and decided to get it. This is a new offering from Buffalo Trace, aged for 10 years in barrels made from "Quercus mongolica" oak from Mongolia, trees that supposedly endure harsh weather. The nose has vanilla notes and the first sip is quite light. Vanilla, raisins, and burnt sugar are present in the finish. It's a lovely drink; I can't believe it's a bourbon. I'm somewhat new to describing whisky preferences but have been drinking a lot of them for the past 6 years. Forgive my review, but I know what I enjoy and this is superb.

Tastes like maple, oak, laundry soap, resin, and peaches. It's very light and thin; while I get the goal of emphasizing the oak variety, a more robust char would have made it significantly better.
