Niu Lan Shan Chen Niang Baijiu

My second time trying baijiu, so my tasting knowledge is limited. I heard this was a strong aroma baijiu, but it presents as rather light. Therefore, it doesn't have a sauce aroma at all, which is ironic given my initial shopping goal. Nose: Sweetness, melon, anise, and red licorice. Minimal alcohol, but a subtle bitterness and perhaps some alcohol is perceptible. Palate: Hotter and less sweet than the aroma, yet still somewhat sweet. Abundant anise, with a noticeable numbing sensation from clove. Melon accompanied by floral notes. Significant depth exists with the layered melon flavors. A faint hint of petrol appears but isn't overwhelming; I suppose petrol is a common baijiu characteristic. It somewhat resembles a more potent, higher proof junmai sake. A slight petrol burn is present, but it primarily feels high proof rather than truly harsh. It's a demanding palate, yet strangely pleasant. I enjoy it. Finish: Melon, petrol, and clove oil. Nuanced melon flavors intertwine. It remains challenging, but this is a genuinely satisfying finish. - Summary - While not astonishing, I'm quite content with this baijiu. It's not effortlessly drinkable, but I find it to be an approachable introduction to baijiu. It's definitely above a 14, but likely not exceeding a 19. I'd place it in the 16 to 19 range. Currently, I'm leaning towards a 17. For a beginner's baijiu, it's remarkable! Few beverages in this price bracket offer such quality.
