About this bottle

Nikka's limited edition Discovery Series, introduced in 2021 to explore varied production methods, presents its 2022 offerings focusing on distinctive aromas from yeast strains at their Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. The Miyagikyo Aromatic Yeast bottling utilizes rare, experimental yeast cultures and is presented without chill-filtration at 47% ABV. Production for both 2022 expressions was limited to 2,640 bottles for the US market, commencing October 24, 2022, with a suggested retail price of $274.99.

Antwan Ngo 5.0

Possesses numerous characteristics of the 40-year-old Miyagikyo expression, featuring notes of peaches and apricots presented in a more harmonious and sophisticated manner. This was even more enjoyable than the Yoichi. Nose: Peaches, White Chocolate, Strawberries, Vanilla, Marshmallows, Bubble Gum, Honey, Apricots, Almonds, Whipped Cream, Orange Peels. Palate: White Chocolate, Strawberries, Apricots, Bubble Gum, Honey, Pineapples, Luxardo Cherries, Sultanas, Sandalwood, Almonds, Roses. Finish: Apricots, Peaches, Honey, Fig Syrup, Luxardo Cherries, Bubble Gum, Strawberries, Almonds, Marshmallows

Mitchell Addison 4.8

The aroma is even more fruit-forward than the Yoichi expression, evoking stone fruit, almond, strawberry, and mincemeat pie. The peat is employed here to provide balance and lend the overall spirit a deeper character. The flavors echo these qualities, concluding with a finish of peppery, woody, and peaty fruit compote. This whisky is less nuanced than the Yoichi, but nearly as refined. The inclusion of more heavily peated whisky in the blend imparts a more substantial mouthfeel.

Danna Whelan 4.8

The lingering aroma is among the finest I've encountered, featuring sweetness, floral notes, and a creamy quality. I definitely prefer this over the Yoichi aromatic yeast expression.

Diego Botello 3.8

Really powerful, loaded with flavor (perhaps after consuming two mild bourbons…?). A pleasant mouthfeel, with a sharp ending that gradually diminishes.

Jeanie Talbert 4.0

Floral, sake-like aromas on the nose. A subtle palate with very enjoyable, light scents.
