I'm a significant admirer of Mr Black, having acquired nearly all of their releases. My favorites are typically their standard single origin varieties. This particular one is an exception. While I'm certainly no mezcal connoisseur, the few mezcals I have sampled possessed an earthy, smoky, herbal, and/or mineral character to varying degrees. I anticipated this would also have a smoky foundation, but that was notably absent. Instead, what I perceived was a somewhat diluted version of standard Mr Black, a diminished coffee flavor, and a complete lack of mezcal character. I detect no mezcal influence whatsoever. Perhaps it required more time in the cask? Or maybe a more robust mezcal with more pronounced flavors was needed. Personally, this was a complete misstep. Well, not all ventures succeed; we'll consider this a learned lesson. Update: I've re-evaluated this to a 4. I tried it with a 50/50 mixture of milk, and it... tastes entirely different and significantly better with milk.
