About this bottle

Distiller Dave Smith of St. George was inspired by the coffee tradition of New Orleans when he developed St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur. This liqueur is made using Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee beans, roasted on an early 1950s Probat roaster. The beans are ground in the distillery's own grain mill and brewed via cold infusion. French-roasted chicory root, Madagascar vanilla, and organic cane sugar are also incorporated into the coffee liqueur.

I bought this because I generally appreciate St. George, enjoy New Orleans coffee, and wanted to compare it to my usual coffee liqueur, Mr. Black. However, they are not similar at all. Mr. Black is a sweet, potent cold brew coffee liqueur, while St. George NOLA captures the essence of a cup of chicory coffee – bitter, earthy, and complex, but not concentrated. St. George NOLA works well served neat or in an espresso martini, but it gets lost as a cocktail ingredient because it lacks potency. It doesn't even come through well in a White Russian. While I personally enjoy the subtle flavor, I would still recommend Mr. Black to most consumers.

As a fan of New Orleans-style coffee, this was ideal for me, featuring caffeine and chicory.

Rich coffee flavor. Sweet but not overly sweet. Excellent!

Espresso notes create a superb coffee old fashioned.
