Milam & Greene Triple Cask Bourbon

I had been considering this one for several days, and yesterday I decided to purchase a bottle... First, the bottle itself. I know you can't (or shouldn't) judge a bourbon by its container. But I must say, a classic-looking bottle with an intriguing label certainly catches the eye. Now for the liquid inside.... On the nose, I detected the usual leather – as I do with most bourbons I've tried – vanilla, cherry, walnuts, and a slight hint of heat/alcohol. I enjoyed it with ice, as I typically drink my whiskey. The palate is sweet with a distinct flavor of peanuts, along with pecan, apples, and a good amount of spice. The finish is moderate with lingering spice. I rated it 3.75, as I reserve scores of 4 and above for bourbons that truly impress me. But this is very good. I could see myself buying it again.

An elegant, Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Milam & Greene Distillery in Texas Hill Country, made with a mash bill of 70% Texas corn, 22% Pacific Northwest malted rye from Oregon & Washington, and 8% Wyoming barley. Three hand-selected Straight Bourbon Whiskies comprise each bottle: 3-4-year-old Texas bourbon for a burst of spice, 3-5-year-old Kentucky Bourbon for vanilla and fruit flavors, and a vintage Tennessee Bourbon for structure and tannins. The blend is then proofed to taste and bottled on-site at 94 proof. It begins aromatically with notes of grains, wood, flowers, herbs, and spices; while a slightly creamy and delicate progression adds vanilla notes, leading to a warm, medium-length finish.

Tasted neat without water Appearance: Deep Amber and clear Nose: The aroma is clean with medium floral notes and butterscotch. I detect pronounced apple, a bit of rye bread, light baking spices, and oak. Palate: This is off-dry (not very sweet), very smooth, and fills the mouth with even heat. Intense flavors of cherry, white flowers, and baking spices follow from the nose to the palate, and I detect pleasant oak char. Finish: is long, complex, and balanced, with floral candies (if such a thing existed), light oak tannins, and wet stones echoing the flavors above in a late resonance. Conclusion: Very Good! Starting with the Milam & Greene Triple Cask. It's a blend of their own 2-year-old spirit and two sourced barrels, aged 3 and 11 years, bottled at 94% ABV. The aroma is sweet from the corn with a hint of cinnamon. On the palate, the first thing I noticed was the viscosity, which is a bit thin for my preference. However, a wonderful sweetness takes over, more than compensating for the thinness, along with some vanilla. The finish has a hint of candy and moderate spice. The finish length is ideal, leaning towards the longer side of medium. Overall, it's a satisfying dram.

Two bourbons from Tennessee (aged 3 and 11 years) likely hail from Cascade Hollow, blended with a two-year-old Texas bourbon. A discernible Dickel vitamin aroma is present, but it's not pronounced. This is actually quite good. Nothing is overtly wrong with it, but nothing is particularly outstanding either. I'm unsure of the price, but I'd likely categorize this as good yet potentially overpriced if it costs more than $40. I just checked, and it seems to sell for slightly above that, so it's not the worst value.

Scent Profile Fresh baked goods, glazed fruit, toasted grains, nuts, vanilla, dried fruit, oaky butter, a hint of spice. This aroma was unexpected; it's quite unlike typical bourbon, and in a good way. Flavor Profile Fresh baked goods, dried fruit, baking spice, buttery popcorn jelly beans, and a touch of woody dryness. Very similar to the aroma, but with increased buttery notes, and instead of oak, that dry, woody sensation emerges. Aftertaste Profile Medium in length, with notes of buttered popcorn jelly beans, spice, and wood.
