Middle West Spirits Ported Pumpernickel Rye

Nose: woody with hints of vanilla and baking spices Palate: the taste diverges from the aroma, which I don't particularly enjoy. There's a definite funk and spice, but the woodiness is overpowering. Finish: Lacking body. Given the cost, I anticipated a higher proof. Overall: Having enjoyed this brand for a considerable time, I was eager to try this new selection. The packaging, including the presentation box, is appealing and looks good on display. I find the standard expression superior in flavor and more reasonably priced. For my palate, this is overpriced for what amounts to a subpar drink. It's a 5-year age statement, and I spent $100. Poor value. Not impressed.

A dark, almost malty note, followed by typical herbal rye characteristics, menthol, dill, then substantial oak, hay, dark fruits like plum, and also a bright apple note akin to calvados. The finish is smooth and medium to long, with fruity, spicy, and rich notes throughout. I'm undecided if I prefer this or the original dark pumpernickel; while I appreciate the fruitiness, I think I'd enjoy it more if it were absent. However, if you're a fan of port finishes, definitely choose this one.

Presents with some intriguing and peculiar notes. The alcohol content is quite underwhelming, especially considering it's a $100, 5-year-old spirit claimed to be a highlight from this distillery. I would not repurchase this, even for $50. It stands as one of the most regrettable releases of 2024. What was the distillery contemplating by introducing such a dull offering??? The container is attractive, though.

This resembles a sweet, spiced loaf of pumpernickel bread studded with chocolate chips, and the mouthfeel is absolutely wonderful. It fulfills all promises and more. Even for someone who doesn't frequently appreciate ryes, this will remain a special occasion pour in my collection for a long time!

A lot of taste, not much burn, really nice overall, would be good with a cigar.
