McLaughlin Distillery 3799 Bourbon Whiskey

Deep amber hue with coppery highlights. Numerous legs appear swiftly, leaving a lingering sticky residue that descends gradually. The aroma is dominated by rich caramel, sweet corn, and toasted butter. Beneath this, subtle nutty and fruity notes emerge, accompanied by a whisper of ground grains and smoke. It presents a sweet initial taste that continues throughout, beautifully counterbalanced by a pleasing spicy warmth in the middle and a faint bitterness at the finish. The mouthfeel is smooth yet somewhat lacking in body. Evokes the sensation of dark chocolate-coated almonds dusted with cocoa and finished with molasses. It offers considerable interest but could benefit from more subtlety and cohesion. I enjoy it and am eager to sample it in a Manhattan! Revision: A superb Manhattan, a respectable old fashioned, though I may have been overly generous with the initial assessment.

It varies between batches, but the 100% corn mash bill, which is exceptionally aromatic, delivers an unmissable sweetness. The palate features heavy oak char. It provides a pleasant and appropriate warmth throughout the drink. While it's a more expensive bottle for me, supporting a local producer and appreciating the dedication poured into each bottle makes it worthwhile.

I'm genuinely surprised by how much I like this. I didn't have high expectations for a local Pennsylvania bourbon. It's overwhelmingly corn, and definitely has a hint of smoke. It was a gift, but I'd happily pay the regular price for it. A good bourbon made very nearby. I'm a sucker for anything made in Pittsburgh 🤷🏼‍♂️

Smells like a workshop in the best possible way. Notes of hand-cut wood, sweet corn, and hints of campfire. Tastes like mesquite BBQ sauce, oaky richness, and creamed corn. A delightful bourbon from a small Pittsburgh distillery. The visit to the owner and the tour was a blast!

Made entirely from corn, it's quite distinct. Sweet character. The smaller barrel version might be slightly superior, but I likely favor the increased oak presence. It's a worthwhile purchase, much like the smaller barrel offering at 100 proof.
