McKenzie Single Barrel Bourbon (Barrel 1552)

The nose is distinctive, featuring musky oak, ripe fruit, vanilla, molasses, and a hint of smoke. This is very unique, possibly related to another wheated bourbon aged in a specific type of oak. The use of white corn also contributes to a very distinct combination of grains and aging. This nose is absolutely incredible. The palate is rich, full, and chewy, with a quick, gradual wave of flavor that includes the musky oak, some peppery spice, and subtle vanilla and molasses to round it out. The flavors are distinct and balanced, making it absolutely delectable. The harmony of flavors is what makes this shine. Given its age and surprisingly low barrel proof, it has all the right elements. The intensity of the flavors is perfectly controlled, exactly as one would hope. This whiskey is difficult to put into words and truly stands out. The finish is medium-long and chewy, with a lingering spice and an overall muskiness, likely from the barrel. Flavors are easily revealed with chewing, and each sip increases anticipation for the next. This is special, incredible, and a perfect example of what bourbon can be.
