Matsui "The Peated", Kurayoshi Distillery, Tottori limited label

Sampling a Japanese single malt is always enjoyable, especially when someone else is covering the cost. I've had other Kurayoshis, but this one from the Matsui range stands out due to its peat. The packaging is stunning, featuring a Japanese warrior. My research suggests a connection to Tottori city's history. Bottled at 48% ABV, this Japanese exclusive appears to have been aged in barrels that previously held unfermented sake. On the nose, it opens with a raw rice aroma, followed by grapefruit, gooseberries, and forest fruits. After a few sips, it evolved into an apple cake profile. The palate is like peachy water, with a pleasant ginger spice emerging. Cotton candy and peaches are the dominant flavors. The finish has a quality I can only describe as cotton candy peatiness, with apple pie notes. It's a very gentle dram, featuring lemongrass and lemon spice. Overall, this was a highly enjoyable and easily drinkable single malt. It's not overly complex or sophisticated, just a fruity, gentle spirit. I rate this 'rarity' at 84 out of 100.
