I have a substantial collection of tasting notes that I gradually incorporate. This one completes the VS/VSOP offerings from what I consider the "Big Four" Cognacs: Hennessy, Remy Martin, Courvoisier, and Martell. Each possesses its own distinct character. Martell VS has a sharp aroma with sweet grape and raspberry jam, quite similar to Hine, but less dry. There's not much to say about the taste, as it mirrors the aroma and lacks the slight lime note found in the VSOP (I should revisit it sometime). In fact, this might be the sweetest of the "Big Four" Cognacs. If Courvoisier is characterized by orange and rose, then Martell is defined by sweet red fruits, while Remy is spiced apple, and Hennessy is stewed prunes (Hennessy Black is honey blossom). Each is best suited for a mixed drink or sipping occasion that aligns with those flavors, but all are likely far too expensive for mixing. Martell VS is the most affordable of these, but honestly, just get Eagle Rare for the same price...

Aroma of oak and eau de vie, then thin fruit transforms to wood in the mouth, followed by a quick finish. Very suitable for cocktails, less interesting on its own.
Surprisingly good. Obviously artificial color and excessively sweet, yet still enjoyable. Notes of raisins and cinnamon. Best as a digestive, not really for contemplative sipping.
Excellent primarily as a mixer! Also great as a shooter on a cold day. Want an after-dinner sipper? Consider Remy Martin vsop or xo.
This is an excellent choice for mixing. Definitely try it in your sidecars.
